Lightening my Load! (Part A)

This will be here awhile. Scroll down for new reviews and stuff.

Recently, I've gotten into the habit of continually increasing my TBR pile. I'm constantly checking out books, buying from the UBS and library Friends shelves, buying new, then surfing the net and seeing e-books I want to. Meanwhile, books that I was excited to read get tossed into the milk crate while I go on looking for bigger and better things. Then I'm like, hey, didn't I want to read that? So, taking a cue from Ames (and I think someone else too), I'm setting myself a challenge. I'm not going to read anything new until I read these twenty books. Or at least give it the old College Try. If it just ain't happening I'll put it aside, but no more amassing until I'm done. This is gonna be tough, so let me see what happens in a month or so.

So here's the list:

1. Beyond the Edge by Susan Kearney
2. Cast in Shadow by Michelle Sagara
3. The Power of Two by Patti O'Shea
4. Claiming the Courtesan by Anna Campbell
5. 72 Hours by Shannon Stacey
6. The Leopard Prince by Elizabeth Hoyt
7. Warrior or Wife by Lyn Randal
8. Double Trouble by Claire Cross
9. Third Time Lucky by Claire Cross
10. One More Time by Claire Cross
11. All or Nothing by Claire Cross
12. The Dream Hunter by Sherrilyn Kenyon
13. The Revenge of the Second Son by Sara Orwig
14. Twilight Magic by Shari Anton
15. Mistress For a Weekend by Susan Napier
16. Midnight Eyes by Sarah Brophy
17. Summer Light by Jude O'Neill
18. Down the Garden Path by Dorothy Cannell
19. Love at First Bite by Sherrilyn Kenyon et. al.
20. Divine By Mistake by P.C. Cast

Purple means that I tried to read it at some point, then put it aside for whatever reason. Green means that these are old, old loves that I've been meaning to re-read to see how they stand the test of time.
I'm almost finished with No Humans Involved by Kelley Armstrong. I'm really enjoying it. I'm not going to read in any particular order, just whatever grabs me. But it must be off of this list. I do think I'm going to try the Susan Kearney next. I tried one by her before and it didn't quite work for me. But I thought she was worth trying again, and I'm curious about what an "Extreme Blaze" is. Extreme in what way?

Any thoughts, votes, comments? I wonder how many I'll read before the B&N gift card burning a hole in my backpack gets put to use.

My tip is: persevere. It's hard at first. Especially on Tuesdays. LOL But I'm almost done my challenge - and even then I had to change my own rules to a budget. :P But now I'm just using the list for organizational purposes. 20 seems more attainable. Also, the love at first bite anthology, I only read SK's story. It was silly.

I keep thinking I should do this, but I don't think I'm strong enough. :) Maybe I'll do a 10-book challenge and see how that goes.

I think you should read Warrior or Wife because I was wondering how that was. You can be the guinea pig. :)

Hey Devon :D

that's a great idea you have there :D I've been meaning to do one too... although I'm thinking 5 books challenge per month, just to keep my TBR pile manageable, since mine is not that bad :D I also feel for you about your book buyings :D it happens to me once every 3 months it seems :D However, you do have some good stuff in there :D The Power of Two by Patti O'Shea!!!! :D and let me know what you thought of Cast in Shadow... I still haven't read it ^^; oh, and ain't No Humans involved good?!? I think I fell in love all over again with jeremy :D

This is going to be rough. Right after I put up the post, I got something about a 40% off at Harlequin. All of a sudden everything was fascinating. And most of the time, Harlequins are total C reads for me. But it's like oh well, maybe I'll just buy some and hold onto them. No, no, bad girl.

Ames--I don't know what happened to SK. Or me. But she's just ain't doing it for me lately.

Jennie--I'm psyched for a romance set in Ancient Rome.

Nath--I think I'm going to do the O'Shea soon. I think I need a bit of a change from paranormal. I love No Humans Involved. And I love Jeremy :)

I started the Sagara. It was okay, but something else came up that I wanted to read more. The Warren book, I think :)

Great idea! I should do this as well but my main problem is that I never know what I will feel like reading next so I have to wait until I'm in the mood to read a particular type pf book.

Ames is my heroine and now you are gaining on her ;) The minute I try and restrict myself I go bananas so I will wish you well from the sidelines. I haven't bought any books in mass quantities lately but I'm feeling a book buy coming on fast!

It's turning out to be harder than I thought, Cindy. It's like now that I'm doing this, I see books that I want eveywhere. Not helping this is the fact that the first book I picked was pretty much a dud. Hot sex, but a dud nonetheless.

I can't remember the last book I finished. Seriously. It's pathetic. I'm shooting for a one-book challenge. PS, I saw a note on Dear Author that mention my name. Pricing, eh? Got me. I wish I could knock down the prices of ebooks.

Persevere, huh Ames? LOL...that's actually the best advice to give...keep at it, you'll get that pile down...=)

Argghhh...I just wrote this long ass post and it disappeared.

To recap:

Rowena also did a challenge. And did quite well, if I remember correctly.

Ciar--I'm just really curious about ebook pricing and how it is decided. In your case, I read and liked the blurb/excerpt at Samhain, so I popped on over to your site, where I noticed you had stuff elsewhere. There was a book (at Loose-Id, I think), which sounded good too, but it was 1.50 more. Now to be honest, since I never read anything by you before, I'm going to go with the cheaper one, just in case. Of course, if I liked it, I'd then shell out the $$ for the other one:) But why can Samhain price lower?

Anyhow, by that point I'd decided to stop making purchases for awhile. This is going to be the summer of the e-book, because there are so many I want. I've noticed a trend at Samhain of fantasy/romance, which I lurve.

Laughin' at that! I've got the same problem. But I've found that if I post the books in my blog's TBR list, then I make a point to get to them. I mean it would be embarassing to have a book hanging out unread in public for too long!

Of course, any books that were in my TBR mountain before I started my blog never made it to the list. Now that gi-normous backlog would be downright mortifying!

LOL Devon, Ames is beating me right now I think...but I cheated, I changed my books to the books I felt like reading, Ames stuck to her list, I didn't...haha.

I might be able to help you eliminate one. Because, unless you are are real Sherrilyn Kenyon devotee, feel free to skip The Dream Hunter. I read the Dark Hunters as a CASUAL reader, and it felt like most of The Dream Hunter only made sense if you're one of the fans that retains every word she's ever written. It really got bogged down in Atlantean and Greek mythology. I'm not going to bother any more with the Dream Hunter series, and I may not stick with the DH's after Ash's book. I'm hoping her Dark Hunters Companion book helps out with that series.

To me, it seems like she's writing for her hard-core fans and the casual reader, like me, is getting lost. Or am I the only one that wishes she would incorporate a bit of backstory in newer DH books?

QB, I used to be a hardcore DH fan. Like, at Borders at 9am on the release day. But her books are really going downhill. They're just not as fun and compelling as they used to be. I was wishy-washy about getting The Dream Hunter, and I ended up buying it for 75 cents at the library I work at. It ain't calling to me.

As for the issue of backstory, I think the part of the problem is that Kenyon has made things a little too complicated. Plus, she's contradicting "rules" now that she set up earlier in the series. So I think it's a little annoying for readers all around:)

Speaking of library shelves, I have a confession to make. I bought something. But it was Sugar Daddy by Kleypas! For a dollar! I had to before someone else got it.

I know I always say this, but gotta love working in a rich neighborhood.

I really REALLY need to do some kind of challenge like this. REALLY!

Ooooohhhh - nice new look you have going! I love the clouds.

LOL - someone is playing. I like this one too.

I need a challenge like that too ~ I keep picking up new books. My problem is that I'm just not reading them.

Hey Devonna! Good to see you active! I haven't been doing very well with the challenge, to be honest. I just have to be in the right mood at the right time for certain book. And I keep getting new things!
